UPDATE TO GIAQUINTA SERVICES

Thank you for your kind interest and phone calls to our HQ regarding Helen's memorial service.

The time of the memorial service has been set for Saturday at Eleven a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4500 Fairfield Ave, Fort Wayne.   Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Klaehn, Fahl and Melton Funeral Home, 6424 Winchester Road.

REST IN PEACE HELEN GIAQUINTA

  Our Party and our community lost a faithful member on Wednesday with the passing of Helen GiaQuinta, 90.  Helen has been a fixture in the ACDP for decades--serving in many capacities including pct. person, headquarter volunteer, mail helper, canvasser and more.   The Sloppy Joes she made almost every election for scores of Election Day HQ volunteers are legendary....and of course we could always count on her bright smile at every event we had--always asking how everyone was and offering her encouragement. 

I have known Helen for more than fifteen years--in many capacities over the years and I am so privileged to call her a friend. She was always full of great stories, surprises and a lasting love for her family.  It has been an amazing experience to know her even for this short time. 

Helen is an epitome of a life well-lived--she may not have been as visible as her well known children and husband, but never doubt that Helen has left an incredibly long lasting and widespread impact on our community.   She had a great time and touched many lives while she was here.  She will be missed by all.

Please keep her family in your thoughts.

Souder jumps the shark

Mark Souder was on the Pat White show on Monday.  I wish I had taped it.

Souder said that the cost of gas was increasing because the oil business is NOT profitable and that several refineries had to close and cannot afford to re-open.  He also said it is a  MYTH that oil companies are profitable.

Iran

Your humble correspondent was going to post something today about the terrible events unfolding in Iran, but fortunately Stephen Parker has already written on the topic at AroundFortWayne, and much more articulately than I could have done.

Stephen writes:

Those of us who embrace openness in government, who detest most strenuously violence in any form – especially that perpetrated on a people by its very government; those of us who love democracy and detest dictatorships stand with and behind our Iranian brothers and sisters who crave freedom and relief from the tyrannous regime over them.  While the picture, with no thanks to the Iranian government, is not clear as to what exactly is going on there, some of the details that have escaped are shocking and unimaginable.  Pray for Iran and those who live within its borders that the lives lost and suffering of those oppressed will not go unanswered;  that justice and the human spirit will prevail, and the evil will be removed from power.  Remember this as we here in the US go about our weekend, enjoying all that our freedom and system of government allow us.

Amen.

Memo to the President from Robert Reich re: health care

Mr. President:

Momentum for universal health care is slowing dramatically on Capitol Hill. Moderates are worried, Republicans are digging in, and the medical-industrial complex is firing up its lobbying and propaganda machine.

But, as you know, the worst news came days ago when the Congressional Budget Office weighed in with awful projections about how much the leading healthcare plans would cost and how many Americans would still be left out in the cold. Yet these projections didn't include the savings that a public option would generate by negotiating lower drug prices, doctor fees, and hospital costs, and forcing private insurers to be more competitive. Projecting the future costs of universal health care without including the public option is like predicting the number of people who will get sunburns this summer if nobody is allowed to buy sun lotion. Of course the costs of universal health care will be huge if the most important way of controlling them is left out of the calculation.

If you want to save universal health care, you must do several things, and soon:

Congratulations: Fort Wayne named an All-America City for 3rd Time

FORT WAYNE WINS THIRD ALL-AMERICA CITY AWARD:  Honor puts city into Hall of Fame

Tampa, Fla.  – Mayor Tom Henry is proud to announce that Fort Wayne was named an All-America City tonight at the National Civic League’s 60th annual All-America City awards in Tampa, Fla.

The National Civic League’s award honors communities that work together to solve issues facing cities. Fort Wayne was one of 10 cities selected for the 2009 honor.

“I would like to congratulate Fort Wayne’s delegation and the work all the volunteers, sponsors and the community as a whole did for this award,” Mayor Henry said. “Fort Wayne residents should be proud of this national award that puts a positive spotlight on our city and the hard work our community does every day to make it a great place to live.”

The win is Fort Wayne’s third All-America City honor which puts it in the All-America City Hall of Fame. The designation is given to cities that have won the award at least three times. Fort Wayne won the award in 1982, 1998 and now 2009.

Fort Wayne, with the theme of All Together Now, was recognized for its efforts in assisting refugees and helping them integrate and succeed in the community, assisting children through the Great Kids Make Great Communities program, and efforts to raise more funds from the community to improve connectivity of the local trail network and create safer neighborhoods.

More than 30 cities were chosen to present at the competition. The judging panel was made up of city leaders from across the country and chose 10 winners.

Anyone wanting to congratulate the team of community members representing Fort Wayne can welcome them at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Wayne International Airport.
