Last week Matt Kelty smiled and told the press he had done nothing wrong.
This week, he is seeking legal advice from an election law expert.
According to a story on Fort Wayne Observed:
The Kelty for Mayor Campaign is now being advised by Terre Haute Attorney James Bopp, Jr..
Mr. Bopp is an election and constitutional law expert with a national reputation. Most recently, he presented oral argument before the US Supreme Court on April 25 in what most commentators have called the most important election law case of the Supreme Court session.
Of course, not all reviews of Mr. Bopp are glowing. The Indiana Law blog carries this story (from an American Bar Association story) about Mr. Bopp:
[Bopp] has become perhaps the most prominent lawyer in the country in campaign finance and election law, especially as the go-to-guy for conservative religious groups wanting to work within the system, but work it for sure.
If you are innocent...why do you have to "work the system"?

I think this post is best debunked with an example for you Kevin:
Lets say your next door neighbor has a 16 year old daughter. Lets say she falsely accuses you of raping her last night.
Lets say you are 100% innocent.
Are you saying you would NOT hire an attorney because you are innocent and do not need one?
I thought not.
Mike Sylvester
Editors Note- I do not have a 16 year-old neighbor. I have published Mike's unfortunate choice of analogy for the sake of discussion- but let's try to keep on topic!

Mike,
Since I have been Chairman I have filed numerous campaign finance complains with the election board.
In NONE of these instances did the Republican Party choose to have an attorney involved.
Matt Kelty asserts he did nothing wrong....I think hiring an attorney, and a very high priced one at that, shows that he is clearly concerned that he did indeed break the law.
